SAT cheating inquiry delays scores
Students living in China and South Korea are having their October SAT scores delayed due to a cheating investigation. Their scores have been placed on hold, but the deadline for some college applications are fast approaching.
Students who took the test on Oct. 11 were to receive results on Oct. 28. But now, the Educational Testing Service is conducting a review of those scores. The review could take up to four weeks. And the delay could significantly disrupt students applying to colleges.
ETS suspected that some training centers had illegally got copies of SAT testing materials in advance. Then they passed them on to their students and told them what would be on the test.
“It's quite an open secret that some people will manage to get the materials of SAT tests,” said Hu Zhonghua. He is the founder of Beijing OnePlusOne Training School. The school trains students for different tests, including the SAT. He said training centers preparing students for the SAT might leak test materials to students before the exam was held.
In 2013, all SAT tests scheduled in May were cancelled in South Korea due to the charge that test questions were leaked. This incident affected more than 1,500 students.
However, Rebecca Joseph, an associate professor of California State University, said the delay would be unfair for students who have truly prepared for the test. She added that test administrators should have done a better job in guarding the security of test materials.
